How to Use an Acupressure Mat: A Beginner's Guide

An acupressure mat is a simple thing: a fabric mat covered in small plastic points that press into your skin when you lie on it. No batteries, no settings, nothing to learn beyond how long to stay on it.

The first time is a surprise. Here's what to expect and how to start.

What It Feels Like

Sharp, for about thirty seconds. Then it settles.

The points spread your body weight across a wide area rather than concentrating it, which is why the sensation changes so quickly. Most people describe a spreading warmth after the first minute. Some feel it as prickling throughout.

If it stays sharp after a couple of minutes, you're pressing too hard too soon. Get off, put a thin t-shirt on, and try again.

How to Start

  1. Place the mat on a firm, flat surface. A carpet works. A soft mattress doesn't — you need resistance underneath.
  2. Wear a thin t-shirt for your first few sessions. Bare skin is more intense; work up to it if you want to.
  3. Lie down slowly. Don't drop onto it.
  4. Start with 5 minutes. Build up to 15 or 20 as it becomes comfortable.
  5. Roll to one side to get up rather than sitting straight forward.

Where to Use It

The upper back and shoulders are the usual starting point, and the easiest to relax into.

The lower back works well too, though some people prefer to bend their knees to change the contact. For a few habits to go alongside it, see simple ways to ease back tension at home.

The pillow is designed for the neck. Use it separately from the mat at first — the two together is a lot for a first session.

Feet are the most intense option. Stand on it briefly rather than lying down.

When to Use It

Evenings suit most people. It's not a stimulating routine, and plenty of users end up doing it before bed.

After training is the other common slot, once you've cooled down. If you're putting together a post-training kit, here's our guide to choosing between a massage gun and a foam roller.

Consistency matters more than duration. Ten minutes most days beats an hour once a week.

A Few Practical Points

The points will leave temporary red marks. That's normal and fades within the hour.

The mat is cotton with TPE points, and it measures 66 × 42 cm. Spot clean it rather than putting it in the machine.

It comes with a matching pillow.

Before You Start

This is a wellness product. It is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition.

Speak to your doctor first if you are pregnant, have a skin condition, circulatory problems, diabetes affecting sensation, or are taking blood thinners. Don't use it on broken or irritated skin. Stop if you feel pain, dizziness or numbness rather than a firm prickling.

Not suitable for children.
